After the Mets lose the 2016 N.L. Wild Card its time to focus on the 2017 season.
The Mets might have to do some changing in the outfield this offseason as Jay Bruce, Curtis Granderson and Michael Conforto are all lefthanded-hitting corner outfielders. Granderson has another year on his contract, and the Mets are likely to pick up on Jay Bruce's $13 million option on his deal. Don't forget Yoenis Cespedes, who can very likely opt out of his contract according to ESPN and New York Daily News. Cespedes, 31 could test the free-agent market after another great season. If Yoenis stays, the Mets could decide whether to trade Bruce if they do pick up on his contract.
Neil Walker who had season-ending surgery can become a free agent this year. The Mets had signed him to a 1-year $10.5M. The Mets although are expected to make Walker a qualfying offer. Estimated $17M for one-year. Wilmer Flores & T.J. Rivera would add some depth on the Mets bench. Before seeing if Michael Conforto can play 1st base, the Mets have to decide whether to keep Lucas Duda who is arbitration eligible.
After coming into the 2016 with a dangerous rotation, it didn't seem that way in August and September. Matt Harvery, Jacob Degrom, and Steven Matz all had season-ending surgery. Including Zach Wheeler who hasn't pitched in a major-league game since 2014. Bartolo Colon is a free agent this year, and the Mets are expected to bring him back.
