Bring out the brooms! The Mets have defeated the Chicago Cubs by a score of 14-3 and sweeping the Chicago Cubs in 4 games. It's the first time the Mets have gotten a 4 game sweep since the NLCS last year versus the Cubs! Wilmer Flores went 6 for 6, becoming the second met ever to do that.
Yet the Cubs actually led this game 1-0 on a 1st inning RBI single by Anthony Rizzo, giving Chicago a 1-0 lead.
The Mets tied this game immediately as Curtis Granderson in his first AB in 3 days and his 1st AB in the 2 hole all season hit a solo home run to knot the game at 1.
The 2nd inning was the story of the day besides Flores, as the Mets got 7 runs thanks to a Wilmer Flores solo shot, a Rene Rivera two run shot, and RBI singles by Curtis Granderson, Yoenis Cespedes, Neil Walker, and Flores again. Jon Lester, who won NL pitcher of the month for June, exited after 1.1 innings and his ERA was raised to 2.03 to 2.67.
The Mets didn't score again until the 4th when Rene Rivera singled in Wilmer Flores making it 9-1 Mets.
Flores got his 4th hit of the day in the 5th and his second home run on a two run shot that made it a ten run NYM lead.
The Mets used a few pinch-hitters in the seventh because of the ten run lead. Brandon Nimmo came of the bench and got hit by a pitch, then Kelly Johnson pinch-hit for Neil Walker, and hit an opposite field blast! A two run shot for Johnson made it 13-1 Mets.
The Mets scored so much runs this series and since the Cubs had used to much pitchers, they brought in their catcher Miguel Montero to pitch. Montero finished the game for the Cubs, but he did give up a Wilmer Flores hit that was Wilmer's 6th hit of the day, and did give up a RBI single to James Loney.
However, the Cubs did produce two runs off of Logan Verrett in the ninth, on a Wilson Contreras solo home run and a wild pitch by Verrett, but was able to finish the game.
Noah Syndergaard had another spectacular outing, going 7 innings giving up 1 run and only threw 81 pitches. Syndergaard is now 2nd in the NL in ERA, just behind Clayton Kershaw who is on the DL.
It looks like there's a good chance of Syndergaard starting the ASG, and it's also up to Terry Collins' choice since the Mets made the World Series last year, so Collins is the ASG manager for the NL. It would be the 2nd time in 4 years that a met has started the All-Star Game, as Matt Harvey started one in 2013.
However, the Nats took 3 out of 4 vs the Reds, so the Mets only get closer by 1 game. They do face Nats in a four game set Thursday to end the first half of the season, but the Marlins come to town for a three game set starting tomorrow.
In the first game of tomorrow's series Matt Harvey will face of versus Tom Koehler, as both are having rough seasons, but Harvey has been great lately, as he had a 2.83 ERA in June.
