After the Mets lose the 2016 N.L. Wild Card its time to focus on the 2017 season.

Outfield:
The Mets might have to do some changing in the outfield this offseason as Jay Bruce, Curtis Granderson and Michael Conforto are all lefthanded-hitting corner outfielders. Granderson has another year on his contract, and the Mets are likely to pick up on Jay Bruce's $13 million option on his deal. Don't forget Yoenis Cespedes, who can very likely opt out of his contract according to ESPN and New York Daily News. Cespedes, 31 could test the free-agent market after another great season. If Yoenis stays, the Mets could decide whether to trade Bruce if they do pick up on his contract.

Infield:
Neil Walker who had season-ending surgery can become a free agent this year. The Mets had signed him to a 1-year $10.5M. The Mets although are expected to make Walker a qualfying offer. Estimated $17M for one-year. Wilmer Flores & T.J. Rivera would add some depth on the Mets bench. Before seeing if Michael Conforto can play 1st base, the Mets have to decide whether to keep Lucas Duda who is arbitration eligible.

Pitching:
After coming into the 2016 with a dangerous rotation, it didn't seem that way in August and September. Matt Harvery, Jacob Degrom, and Steven Matz all had season-ending surgery. Including Zach Wheeler who hasn't pitched in a major-league game since 2014. Bartolo Colon is a free agent this year, and the Mets are expected to bring him back.

September Call-Ups

9/1/2016

Earlier today, the Mets recalled and activated Michael Conforto back to the Major Leagues. Since the acquisition of Jay Bruce before the deadline, Conforto has not had the opportunity to play. Since Bruce is a right fielder, Granderson was pushed to center and Cespedes has been playing left, leaving Conforto with nowhere to play other than the minors.

Conforto being called up is a strategic move for the Mets. They could use another bat for their postseason push, even though the offense has looked its best recently. Scooter, as he is called by Noah Syndergaard, had great success during last years World Series run. In his rookie season, he showed that nerves aren’t an issue for him in big moments. He even had great success against the league’s toughest and most proven pitchers. During the series against the Dodgers last season, Conforto hit home runs against both Zach Greinke and Clayton Kershaw, thus proving that he’s ready for big moments.

Even with all of his success last season, it hasn’t been as easy for Michael this season. Throughout his time in the big leagues this year he has been very inconsistent. This inconsistency resulting in a couple trips back down to the minors. However, this seems to be his last change of the season as the Mets want him to be a part of their final push.
A few weeks ago, the Mets were struggling and the postseason didn’t look like it was on the horizon. However, with this recent success, the Mets find themselves just 1.5 games out of the second Wild Card spot. So, once again, the chance for a second straight postseason appearance is in clear sight. With this tight race coming down to the wire, the Mets could surely use every asset they have. Even if Conforto doesn’t secure a starting spot on the roster, he can surely be a valuable piece off the bench: a powerful batter from the left side of the plate. Michael Conforto, or Scooter if you prefer, welcome back to the Majors.
